Punk 365

punk365

I am proud to announce the publication of this book because there are 3 Punk Turns 30 photos inside!

The folks at Harry N. Abrams did a beautiful job of putting the hard work of all the photographers and of the author, Holly George Warren together in a compact, substantial piece of coffee-table quality art book. A must! Makes a great gift!

Here's the blurb from Amazon.com (who I am sure would want you to buy it from them, so let me leave you with this link to its page on Amazon)

Book Description
Thirty-plus years ago a dark rumble of noise gurgled up from the Lower East Side of New York City, made its way across the Atlantic to Great Britain, zigzagged back over the pond to the West Coast, and exploded. Its name — Punk. In Punk 365, the most provocative photography documenting the performances, the looks, and the attitude has been gathered together, revealing reverberations that continue to shake up the status quo.

Here we see it all: Pre-punk pioneers, the Stooges, the New York Dolls, the MC5. New York’s harbingers of change, the Ramones, Patti Smith, Richard Hell & the Voidoids. London’s anarchists, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Slits. The West Coast’s anti-Beach Boys, X, the Germs . . .the list goes on. By the mid-1980s, from the Replacements to Bad Brains, the sound transmogrified into everything from garage punk to hardcore. Punk 365 has them all, including more than 300 different artists by the most talented photographers who captured the scene, including Bob Gruen, Roberta Bayley, Jill Furmanovsky, Stephanie Chernikowski, Godlis, Janette Beckman, and more.

About the Author
Holly George-Warren is an award-winning writer, editor, producer, and music consultant. She has contributed to more than forty books about music, and has written for numerous magazines and newspapers. Richard Hell’s first album was Blank Generation (1977), and his most recent the retrospective Spurts. He is the author of the novels Go Now and Godlike.

I am happy to report that West Coast Punk is well represented here, including one of my shots of Avengers front woman, the beautiful Penelope Houston seen here with Rodney Bingenheimer at KROQ.

Penelope Avenger & Rodney

New York punk rock and the UK influence abound, and wouldn't you know that two of the most iconic punk rockers who made a name in NYC were actually from Ohio? Yes, The Dead Boys, whose antics are peppered throughout Punk365 and The Cramps, whose front man Lux Interior is indeed from the Buckeye State. Punk 365 includes this favorite Cramps band portrait.

The Cramps

This Classic Cramps band portrait, photographed in Lux & Ivy's room at the long-gone Tropicana Motel is one of the images in my Unguarded Moments: Backstage and Beyond exhibit which hits the road in one month.

Both the Cramps and the Penelope/Rodney photos are two of the 6 images that are available for purchase during the tour - a great big 16x20 print! Click the photos to learn more.

Finally, one of the progenitors of punk rock and indeed most of the best music out there, Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale is represented by a wider shot of the frame this extreme close-up came from.

Punk 365 has an October 1 publication date. Run right out to your local book store and thumb through it. You will fall in love, I guarantee!

Why I can't imagine what record was the inspiration for the "Unguarded Moments" exhibit title!

I can't wait to pick up a copy of this book. I spent my "formative years" in several clubs in the East Village and environs during the ealy and mid eighties. I won't tell exactly how underage we all were...
