From the Vaults - Dead Boys and X
In 1977, The Dead Boys spent a couple of weeks in Los Angeles starting around Halloween and staying til mid-November. This flyer is from a show they did at the Starwood (and they did a couple shows there during October - November 1977) to bid "Bon Voyage" to LA for a short spell. As you can see, it was an all ages show and started at 6 PM! You can also see that bassist, Jeff Magnum's name was misspelled as "Jess."
1977 marked the opening of the floodgates for East Coast punk bands as well as UK punk bands coming to LA. The Ramones started the flood in August of 1976, although Patti Smith was performing at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip as early as January of that year. In 1977, however, we saw Blondie, Television, Mumps and Talking Heads from NYC and from the UK, The Damned, The Jam and Elvis Costello, and from Ohio, of course, The Dead Boys, Rubber City Rebels, and Devo. Not a bad showing, and there were probably a lot more - as this is just off the top of my head. There was also that year an Iggy Pop tour that featured David Bowie on keyboards, and Blondie opening.
1977 has been called the Ground Zero year for punk in general, and for punk in LA, it certainly was a very good year.
