Penelope Avenger & Rodney, originally uploaded by Theresa K.

Here are Penelope Houston of the Avengers, a San Francisco punk band, and Rodney Bingenheimer, of Rodney on the ROQ, aka "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" for you 2000's movie-goers.

The Avengers were a strident, political punk band from San Francisco led by the beautiful Penelope Houston. I think she really could have taken the Billy Idol pop star route, but she's always stuck to her guns and pleased her inner whims, which I applaud. Avengers bassist, James Wilsey who we knew as "Jimmy" later joined Silvertone, the band that backed Chris Isaak.

You may remember the Avengers' great single, "The American in Me." I think that song is as vital today as it was in the late 70s and early 80s. You should read the lyrics here. They also had an anthemic song I loved called We Are the One.

Say what you will about Rodney, he was the guy who always played indie records and was the guy who played local bands, and had them on his show. Rodney on the ROQ was the show that inspired dozens of bands and DJ's alike. So give props!
